Gum disease is a serious and dangerous dental issue. It’s best to prevent this disease at all costs. The major cause of gum disease is plaque and tartar building up around the gumline and infecting the gums. Unfortunately, because flossing and brushing can be difficult when you have braces, gum disease can easily attack adjusting smiles. So, our orthodontist, Dr. Dipak Chudasama, encourages you to do everything you can do avoid gum disease by doing the following things:

-Focus on properly brushing your teeth: Make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush after every meal and snack. It’s best to brush for two minutes each time and use short, gentle strokes. Don’t forget to tilt the brush to clean under and around the wires and brackets.

-Focus on properly flossing your teeth: Make sure to floss your teeth at least once a day. If you can floss more, do it. Use tools that make flossing easier (like a floss threader or waxed dental floss) to make the flossing routine more convenient.

-Visit your dentist every six months: Your routine dental cleaning and exam appointments are vital when preventing gum disease. This is because the treatments provided remove the plaque and tartar from your smile. So, make sure to keep up with these appointments regularly.
